Police in Fayetteville, N.C., said Wednesday that they have found the remains of missing Fort Bragg Spc. Kelli Bordeaux.
Nicholas Holbert, a registered sex offender who was with Bordeaux at the time of her disappearance, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in her death, Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
Bordeaux's remains were found in a deeply wooded area between two open fields off River Road, about a mile and a half north of Interstate 295, Medlock said.
A forensic unit trailer, along with Fayetteville police officers and Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies, were at the scene on River Road. Crime scene tape cordoned off one side of the two-lane road.
Medlock said at the news conference that the investigation is still active.
Bordeaux, a native of St. Cloud, Fla., disappeared April 14, 2012, after getting a ride home from a Ramsey Street tavern. She was 23 at the time of her disappearance.
Since Bordeaux vanished, investigators have had few leads in the case.
Bordeaux left her apartment April 13, 2012, with Holbert and went to the now-closed Froggy Bottoms tavern, about a half-mile away on Ramsey Street at Interstate 295.
She spent the evening shooting pool and singing karaoke before leaving with Holbert, who lived in the woods behind the bar and worked there part time.
That was the last time Bordeaux was seen.
A coworker reported Bordeaux missing April 16, 2012, when she failed to show up for work at Fort Bragg. She was a specialist with the 601st Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade.
The Army declared Bordeaux dead in May 2013. The action to change her status does not mean the Army thinks Bordeaux is dead. It was done so her family would be eligible for survivor benefits, an Army news release at the time said.
