(Tribune News Service) — The Navy released its updated hairstyle regulations for female sailors earlier this week in its All Hands magazine.
It took nearly a year to come up with the new policy that allows a broader range of acceptable hairstyles, which the magazine article said "was informed heavily by fleet feedback and lessons learned from recent Navy and Department of Defense questions concerning hair and grooming standards." Black U.S. Army soldiers criticized the service's redo saying the changes were racially biased.
The magazine article included an interactive viewer — available at http://ift.tt/1yB32Oe — giving a 360-degree view of acceptable hairstyles, which include examples of short and long styles, and several races.
Highlights include:
• Hairstyles must not interfere with the proper fit of headgear, protective masks or equipment.
• When in uniform, hair may touch, but not fall below the lower edge of the back collar. With service dress jumper uniforms, hair can extend a maximum of 1 1/2 inches below the top of the jumper collar.
• A bun cannot exceed 3 inches from scalp. Its diameter should not exceed 4 inches. Buns must not protrude through the opening in the back of a ball cap.
• All hairstyles must minimize scalp exposure.
• A more relaxed ponytail is allowed only during physical training.
• Beginning January 2015, Naval Service Training Command will cease mandatory female haircuts at Recruit Training Command and Officer Training Command.
