Wildcats, Falcons win to set up early showdown

A late defensive miscue swung an evenly-matched regional and divisional showdown Saturday as the Naples Wildcats edged the host Vicenza Cougars 2-1.

Miguel De Frutos capitalized on what Vicenza coach Roland Sturk called a "miscommunication" around the Cougars' defensive goal for his second score of the game and the first win of the Wildcats' young season.

Naples lost to reigning Division II dynasty Marymount 3-1 on March 14.

De Frutos scored his first goal on a first-half free kick. Vicenza answered with an Andrew Thomas goal off an assist by Marco Peruzzo. That knotted the game at one goal apiece entering halftime, and it held up until that decisive late sequence.

American Overseas School of Rome 5, Sigonella 1: Saturday at Rome, Alessandro Elia scored four goals and assisted on the fifth as the Falcons blasted the visiting Jaguars.

Vishal Sharma deposited Elia's assist to round out the AOSR scoring. Thomas Wray found the net for Sigonella.

The 2-0 Falcons face their toughest test of the young season next weekend with a Saturday visit to Division I Naples.

AFNORTH 5, SHAPE 3: Friday at Mons, Belgium, Danny Habel scored the game's final two goals as the Lions withstood a Spartan rally.

Jesse Timmons scored the game's first goal just five minutes in and Claudius Karich added two more in the first half to give AFNORTH a seemingly safe 3-0 lead.

But SHAPE had other ideas; two goals by Kenneth Tutt and another by Christian Lozar brought the home team back to even before Habel's late scores put the game away.

Patch 6, Hohenfels 0: Saturday at Stuttgart, Germany, six different Panthers scored one goal each in a thorough whipping of the visiting Tigers.

Faouzi Diarrassouba, Micah Williams, Liam Houlgate, Dan Bacskai, David Humphreys and Austin Locke found the net for Patch. The Panthers will take the momentum into their first Division I showdown of the season, a visit to Wiesbaden next Saturday.

Lakenheath 8, Brussels 1: Friday at Brussels, Elmer Ramos exploded for five goals as the Division I Lancers blasted the Division III hosts.

Christopher Miles assisted on four Lakenheath goals in the rout.

The Lancers now move on to bigger competition. They'll swing through Germany next weekend for games against DODDS-Europe's two biggest high schools in Kaiserslautern and Ramstein.

James Cline scored for Brussels.

Black Forest Academy 14, Bitburg 0: Saturday at Bitburg, the visiting Falcons cruised to a second straight victory.

BFA, which beat Wiesbaden 1-0 on March 14, is off until the other side of spring break. The squad's next game comes April 18 at Kaiserslautern.
