A duo of lieutenants from the 25th Infantry Division won the 2014 Best Ranger Competition on Sunday.
Second Lts. Michael Rose and John Bergman clinched the top spot after a strong showing overnight and through the final day of events, which included the Darby Queen obstacle course and the final buddy run, according to officials from the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade.
Rose and Bergman pushed out frontrunners Capt. Robert Killian and 1st Lt. Nicholas Plocar of the National Guard.
Killian and Plocar, who led for most of the grueling three-day competition, finished in second place.
Staff Sgt. Christopher Broussard and Sgt. 1st Class Charles Cogle, of the 75th Ranger Regiment, rounded out the top three teams.
This year’s Best Ranger Competition kicked off Friday morning and ran almost continuously through Sunday evening at Fort Benning, Ga.
Of the 50 teams to begin the competition, only 26 made it into the final day.
Eighteen two-man teams were eliminated for medical reasons, and six didn’t make the cut Friday night after the foot march event.
The three-day Best Ranger Competition was established in 1982, and it has been compared to Ironman and Eco-Challenge competitions.
Competitors are put through events that test their physical conditioning, Ranger skills and team strategies. The events are purposely scheduled back-to-back and around the clock for 60 hours, allowing little time for rest and meals.
All competitors are graduates of the Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, and they represent all the services.
