Report: Brad Pitt to play Gen. Stanley McChrystal in movie

Brad Pitt will reportedly play Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal in the movie adaptation of a book written by the reporter who got McChrystal fired.

McChrystal resigned as commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan following a scathing June 2010 article in Rolling Stone by Michael Hastings, which portrayed unidentified members of McChrystal’s staff being disrespectful to senior civilian leaders, including Vice President Joe Biden.

Pitt’s production company will produce a film version of Hastings’ book “The Operators,” which is based on his reporting from Afghanistan, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday.

McChrystal‘s publicist said he was busy Monday and did not have time to comment. Reached by phone, McChrystal’s wife told Military Times that he would not want to talk about the movie.

In April 2011, a Defense Department inquiry later cleared McChrystal and his staff of any wrongdoing and challenged the accuracy of Hastings’ reporting. In response, Rolling Stone issued a statement arguing that the inquiry offered “no credible source — or indeed, any named source — contradicting the facts as reported in our story.”

Hastings was killed in an August 2013 car crash.
